Earlier this year, Durham Region resident Anita noticed something unsettling. The world around her was becoming cloudy. Reading was harder. Faces were more difficult to recognize. Everyday moments were becoming uncertain.
When Anita learned she needed cataract surgery, she felt the worry many patients experience. But at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital’s Regional Eye Care Centre, a skilled, compassionate team quickly put her at ease. Reflecting on her experience, Anita shared, “I was very relaxed throughout the whole procedure, all thanks to the staff.”
Today, Anita’s vision is clear again.

For many of us, changes in vision like Anita experienced are not a matter of if, but when. Whether it’s ourselves, our parents, or someone we love, eye care becomes essential as we age.
About 1 in 6 Canadians aged 65 and older are affected by cataracts, a number that will continue to grow as our population ages. Because of donors like you, patients and families across Durham Region can access specialized vision care close to home. In the past three years alone, more than 27,000 patients have received care at Bowmanville Hospital’s Regional Eye Care Centre, including nearly 18,000 cataract surgeries. This level of care is made possible by the equipment your community helps provide.
This spring, you can help fund a new YAG Eye Laser for Bowmanville Hospital.
A YAG laser allows physicians to efficiently treat blurred vision that some patients experience after cataract surgery as scar tissue develops. It can also help manage glaucoma by lowering eye pressure and protecting vision.
As demand grows, this technology will help more patients receive the treatment they need, sooner.
Thanks to the generosity of The Henry Mortgage Team, your gift will go even further. They have committed $15,000 in matching funds, meaning every donation made before June 15, 2026 will be doubled to help bring this vital equipment to our new hospital.
